REAL EXPERIENCES FROM THE DIALYSIS JOURNEY

What Rey and Sarah Say

Rey and Sarah Mangio celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary together with a cake.

"When I was suddenly diagnosed with advanced CKD and had to start emergency dialysis, I was overwhelmed and didn’t know what to do first. This guide helped me understand some of the everyday things I could actually control, especially when it came to food and my routine. It made everything feel a little less overwhelming and gave me something practical to follow as I adjusted to dialysis."

Rey Mangio — Dialysis patient

“When my husband started dialysis, I was anxious about almost everything — especially food and whether I was doing enough to help him. I also found myself getting overwhelmed by all the stories and advice I heard from other people. This guide helped me focus on what we could actually do at home. Having something simple to refer to made grocery shopping and everyday decisions feel much less stressful.”

About the Author: Trisha Dy, RN

Trisha Dy is a registered nurse with experience in renal and home healthcare. She also knows firsthand what it is like to care for a family member while navigating serious health concerns.

In 2023, both of Trisha’s parents were diagnosed with cancer. Her mother was treated for breast cancer after previously going through endometrial cancer, while her father was diagnosed with bone and skin cancer along with diabetes, hypertension, and three cardiac stents.

Caring for her father has taught Trisha how much everyday decisions can matter, especially when it comes to food, medications, and routines at home. Paying close attention to his diet and daily care has been an important part of helping him stay as healthy as possible and remain dialysis-free despite his health challenges.

Today, Trisha combines her nursing background with her experience as a family caregiver to make complicated health information easier to understand and apply at home. She created this guide to give patients and caregivers practical information they can use during everyday grocery trips.
